When we decided it was time to rethink Porto Polytechnic's entrepreneurship program, we thought we had a fair idea of how we were performing so far. But HEInnovate provided us with a much more integrated approach, that led us to think outside the box and go deeper. It gave us a framework to develop a much more participative process. We ended up organizing de-centralized workshops with different stakeholders within the organization, asking the different groups to use the tool as the guide to the discussion. We have been doing it ever since and it has proved to be an amazing trigger for integrated thinking inside Porto Polytechnic. We have been using HEInnovate to promote the change in the way people think about, act and support entrepreneurship. Porto Polytechnic’s 2020 strategy for entrepreneurship is a direct result of the change HEInnovate triggered. And we keep on using it.

The HEInnovate self-assessment tool is being used to track stakeholder perceptions of how entrepreneurial the new institution is as the transformation project unfolds. It is proving to be an invaluable aid in compiling evidence of progress towards our vision of an engaged and entrepreneurial university, and in disseminating good practice and the latest thinking on entrepreneurial universities to all stakeholders.
I first discovered HEInnovate tool in relation to the HEInnovate workshop organized during the Partnerships for Innovation and Socio-Economic Impact: The Entrepreneurial University in Stockholm in March 2014.
In my role as Director for Research and Innovation at the University of Stavanger I found this could be a very interesting tool to use when making a systematic approach to the challenging topic that is entrepreneurship and innovation activity at a university. I have used the tool several times internally and see the potential of using the tool over time. The University of Stavanger is member of the European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU) and the consortium is considering using HEInnovate amongst all members in a structured approach.
