HEInnovate is a free online self-assessment tool for all types of higher education institutions who wish to explore their innovative potential. It is an initiative of the European Commission's DG Education and Culture in partnership with the OECD. You can read more about HEInnovate on the ‘about us’ page of the website.
You can find an input paper for each dimension of HEInnovate on the ‘other documents’ page of the website and linked to the pages of the self-assessment. You can also meet our experts, the driving force behind HEInnovate on the About us page.
Click the ‘log-in’ button on the website of HEInnovate, and you will be taken to a page which gives you the option to register for an account. Registration is free and it only takes a minute.
No. Resources and supporting material on the HEInnovate website are available to give you the knowledge to use the HEInnovate tool and there are video tutorials available to help use the website.

You do not have to log-in to access many of the background resources for HEInnovate. Continuing as a guest means that no information will be stored about you and your self-assessment completion will be anonymous and automatically removed from the system after 90 days. You have the right to have your information deleted at any time.
Your self-assessment completion will only be accessible if you copy the unique link generated for you after the submission of the self-assessment. You can also email this unique link to your email address, to make access easier. However, please note, that your completion will be automatically deleted from the system after 90 days.
Click the ‘log-in’ button on the top right-hand side on the HEInnovate homepage. You will be taken to a page which will ask you for your log-in details. If you have forgotten your details, you can recover them by selecting ‘forgot password’.
Upon completing the self-assessment, the results will be stored in the system, and you can access them and delete them from your user dashboard at any time upon login. Your results will be stored in the system for 7 years. Afterwards they will be automatically deleted. Please read our Privacy Policy for further details on how we handle your data.
Yes, we encourage you (and your institution) to use the tool multiple times to assess evolution and contrast the results over time.
HEInnovate is not a benchmarking tool between institutions, however you can see an average across all completions and the average of all completions from your institution. However, your self-assessment results are kept private and confidential and your results are only accessible by you – or if you completed the self-assessment as part of a group, then by the group administrator as well - and the site administrators.
The HEInnovate website provides access to a full training package to enable you to deliver a workshop at your institution. This includes an introductory presentation, a document on the eight dimensions of HEInnovate, a training manual, workshop guides and evaluation forms. You can also access digital resources on the website that include videos on how to implement HEInnovate workshops.
Yes. In order to set up a group, you must first sign into your existing account. Once signed in, go to the HEInnovate Dashboard and click on "Create a new group". Next, enter a unique group name to create your own group which will make you a group administrator on HEInnovate. Finally, use the "Manage my groups" link in the Dashboard to manage your groups on HEInnovate.
